ER308L is the rod you need for welding stainless steel. Make sure you have a couple tubes of this on your cart because even if you think all your welding will be mild steel or aluminum, when a stainless project arises, you will want to match the metal with stainless rods for the best quality and longest lasting welds.
How To Select Filler Rod
The thickness of the metal being welded will determine the diameter of the rod.
- 045” diameter filler rod for thin sheet metal
- 1/16” diameter filler rod for welding metal 1/8” thick or less
- 3/32” diameter filler rod for welding metals thicker than 1/8”.
Match the alloy you’ll be welding to the filler rod. Here are some common applications:
- ER70S-2 – Mild steel and 4130 chrome moly tubing
- 4043 – Aluminum
- ER308L – Stainless Steel
- Silicon Bronze – Used for brazing and even combining dissimilar metals like copper to steel
It’s usually a great idea to have a tube of a few kinds available because you never know what kinds of projects you’re going to run into. Plus, our filler rods come in convenient tubes that allow you to easily open and close to keep your filler rods clean and free of contaminants.
